A STUDY ON QUANTUM OF BIOMEDICAL WASTE GENERATED IN A TERTIARY CARE TEACHING HOSPITAL OF SOUTH INDIA

Introduction: Management of biomedical waste (BMW) has become a very serious health problem in developing countries. Every day, the care hospitals and various facilities large amount hazardous potentially infectious wastes is generated. Inappropriate management chaotic disposal that occur hospital cause types effect on society. Objectives: To estimate quantity BMW generated by departments to determine their compliance with norms. Materials methods: With regards quantum retrospective study was conducted for period 3 years from January 2019 December 2021, bio-medical an observational months July 2021 September 2021. Selected areas were included study. Area wise collected, segregated disposed off observed recorded checklist designed existing rules 2016. Results: The during 20-19-106563 kg/year, 2020-98353 2021-75951 kg/year. Yellow constituted maximum all years(52%). Overall 2016 85%. Conclusions: high as per permitted norms local regulatory body. All concerned staff should be frequently trained this regard avoid excess wastage, order bring down
